How is Terrazzo Made

22 July 2024

Where does Terrazzo come from?

Terrazzo is back! This classic decoration is centuries old and was used as a cheaper terrace covering for large buildings such as churches and other historic buildings. The leftovers from the marble quarry were poured into the concrete. When the floors were walked on a lot, they were, as it were, naturally polished and the small pieces of granite and marble became visible. People thought this was so beautiful that more and more floors were cast in this way.

How is it made?

The technique they applied more than 500 years ago is still the same one we use today. The only difference is that we can now choose from a variety of colors, grains, and finishes for your Terrazzo. Nowadays, the tiles are machine-polished until you achieve the desired finish.

How sustainable is Terrazzo?

Terrazzo can be made from any waste product. In addition to marble chips (leftovers), you can also use plastic, glass, or other waste materials to create the fun colorful speckles in the concrete. Terrazzo is also extremely impact- and scratch-resistant! In addition, Designtegels' Terrazzo is impregnated in the factory so that it is stain-free for the first 10 years. And the longer the tiles are in place, the more beautiful the floor becomes!

Terrazzo tiles

In the past, labor was relatively cheap and you had craftsmen specialized in installing terrazzo floors. Just as concrete is poured now, this was done with a special mix of chips and concrete, usually with an edge and decorations in different colors. After this had dried, the floor was polished. That gave you a terrazzo floor in one piece. Because this is now too labor-intensive and impractical, especially for small spaces, we haveTerrazzo tilesin our collection. These are easier to install on the floor and can also be placed on the wall! Here you can also choose different colors for finishing the edges.

Other Terrazzo accessories too

Terrazzo is becoming more and more popular, and you can see that reflected in everything. Nowadays, you can get all kinds of accessories with a Terrazzo finish. Prints on cushions, mugs, but also countertops or sinks. The nice thing is that these combine perfectly with a beautiful floor or backsplash fromour Terrazzo collection.
